ダンケルクとは、第二次世界大戦初期に快進撃を続けるドイツ軍にフランス本土にいたイギリス軍が押され、ダンケルクから決死の撤退をした戦いのことを指します。
本作に、ストーリーというストーリーはありません。
おおむね３つの視点から、同時並行的にダンケルクを描きます。
死地になったダンケルクから奪取するために、利用できるものは何でも利用しようとする兵士。
燃料が無くなるまで空中戦を戦いつづけるスピットファイヤの搭乗員。
ダンケルクにいる同胞を救うために英本土から戦場へと向かう民間船。
この３つの視点が行ったり来たしながら、映画は進んでいきます。
クリストファーノーラン監督というと、「メメント」「ダークナイト３部作」のように練りこまれた脚本が印象的です。
ですが、本作については、ただ淡々と戦場を描きたかっただけのように感じます。
「なんとかして生き残りたい」というのも人間なら、「命の危険もいとわず命を救いに行く」のも人間です。
「仲間を救うために、死ぬことが分かっていても戦い続ける」のも人間なら、あえて死地に残ろうとするのも人間です。
このあたり、ダークナイト・ライジングとテーマが重なる部分があるのかもしれません。
空を飛ぶスピっとファイヤあの映像は印象的です。
多くの批評家から映像・演出・音楽・音響効果などが絶賛されたそうですが、その評価も納得です。
