電子レンジが「チン」と鳴った。これでカレーが食べられる。タカシがいそいそと電子レンジの扉を開けると、なぜかレトルトが熱々の子猿に化けていた。しかも、子猿はいきなりタカシに向かって飛びついてきた。
「あつっう」
思わずタカシが振り払うと、子猿はベタッっとキッチンに落ちた。ぶつけた鼻をさすり、悲しそうな表情をタカシに向けてくる。
「悪かった。そんなつもりはなかったんだ」
お詫びのしるしによく冷えた牛乳を差し出すと、最初は背中を向けていた子猿も、喉の渇きに負けたのか受け取って喜んで飲んだ。子猿を抱き上げると、すでに人肌程度の温もりになっている。優しく背中と頭をなでてあげると、ほどなくして寝息を立て始めた。
寝ている子猿をベットに置くと、タカシは温めていたレトルトのパッケージを確かめた。よく見ると「ザ・ルー」ではなく、「サ・ルー」と書かれている。間違えてレトルトのサルを購入してしまった。
温めてしまったものは仕方がない。
子猿との共同生活に最初は困惑したけど、懐かれるとかわいいものだ。仕事に出かけるときには悲しそうな鳴き声を上げ、仕事から帰ってくると全力で抱きついてくる。タカシのへたくそな手料理でも、美味しそうに食べてくれる。
これはもう手放せない。
子猿も一匹では寂しいだろうと、タカシは「サ・ルー」をふたつ追加購入することにした。自宅に届くと、さっそくひとつめを電子レンジで温める。すると、なぜか水を切るときに使うキッチン用具が現れた。
パッケージを確かめると「ザ・ル」と書かれている。紛らわしくてしかたがない。子猿はさっそくザルで遊んでいる。
まあいいか。次は注意しないと。そう思いながら、もうひとつのパッケージを見ると、今度は「サ・レー」と書かれている。
