元保険調査員の青年、レナードが主人公です。
彼は妻がレイプされたあげくに殺害されて、そのときに犯人から受けた頭部への打撲と精神的ショックにより、事件以降については１０分しか記憶が持ちません。
彼は記憶代わりにメモと写真を活用して、復讐のために犯人を追い続けます。
これが本筋ですが、１０分しか持たない記憶を映画でどう表現するか、その表現方法が独特で革新的です。
映画は白黒パートとカラーパートに分かれます。
白黒パートは過去で、時系列順に並んでいます。カラーパートは現在進行形ですが、時系列は逆向き、つまり遡っていきます。
だから観客は、主人公と同じく、なぜこの状況に陥っているのか理解できません。
白黒パートを挟み、次のカラーパートで先ほどの状況に陥った経緯を理解しますが、いまの状況はやはり分かりません。
その状況を理解するには次のカラーパートを待ちます。
こうした白黒パートとカラーパートが交互に重なり、時系列てきにどんどん近づき、重なったところで全ての謎が分かるという仕組みです。
この手の作品は、構造の妙だけで話を進めたくなりますが、それぞれの断片にナゾと驚きが仕掛けられており、最後のどんでん返しも決まっており、これはまさに傑作だと思います。
製作費900万ドルで封切り時に11館だった上映劇場が500館以上に広がり、アカデミー賞にも複数ノミネートされています。
最終的に興行成績は4000万ドルまで伸びましたが、2000年代の映画としては4作品目(劇映画としては初)となるアメリカ国立フィルム登録簿に追加されたことが、この映画の価値を表していると思います。
