映画はマトリクス・リローデットの続きから始まります。
ネオは接続されていないのに、マトリクスの世界に取り込まれて意識不明になっています。
いる場所はトレインマンが支配する不思議な駅。彼に命令できるのはマトリクスで登場した情報屋だけです。
預言者にそのことを告げられたトリニティとモーフィアスがマトリクスに入り、情報屋に銃を突き付けてネオを救います。
ネオは帰る途中で預言者と再会します。
「理解できない選択の先はだれにも見えない」と告げられます。
預言者は戦争を終わらせるためにネオを導き、安定を求める設計者に対抗して、世界に変数を入れていると説明します。
スミスはネオの裏側であり、システムがバランスを保つために生み出したと示唆されます。そして、スミスが全てを変えてしまう力を持ちつつあると。
機械と人間の戦争は最終局面を迎えます。
ドリルがザイオンの外壁を打ち破り、ついに侵入します。必死に抵抗する人類ですが、ドックは占拠され、徐々に後退していきます。
最後の希望はネオだけ。
ネオは船を一隻借りると、機械都市の中心にいき、スミスを倒すことを条件に平和を提案します。
ネオはマトリクスに入り、スミスとの最終決戦に挑みます。
という感じのストーリーです。
テーマは何度も語られる選択です。
前半でネオにあこがれる青年が登場します。彼は志願兵となりますが、弾薬もまもとに運べません。それが最終決戦では立派に弾薬を運び、トラブルにも対処し、しかもミフネ船長が戦死したあとのロボット兵器に乗り込み、船を迎え入れるためにゲートを開けるという大事な仕事をこなします。
乗組員の恋人たちも、自分たちの街を守るために戦うという選択をします。
随時、この選択が映画には登場します。
ＣＧもふんだんに使われており、狭い通路を潜り抜けるシーンや、機械と人間との戦闘は迫力満点です。
大量のスミスと対面するシーンは映画紹介でよく使われました。撮影は似たひとを集めたそうです。
物語の構成としては、人類が滅亡するかそれともネオが間に合うのか、というのがタイムリミットの設定です。このタイムリミットの設定は映画のメインでもあり、成功していると思います。
ミッドポイントはネオとトリニティが機械都市に向かうところですが、どうすれば解決するのかというのがその時点では明瞭ではないので、結果としてぼやけた印象です。
主人公の変化を前提とする映画は、シリーズ物ではどんどん主人公が完成してしまうので、２作目はまだしも、３作目になる苦しくなる印象があります。
ミッションインポッシブルとか００７のような、主人公は最初から完成されていて成長関係ない話なら良いのですが。
本作で完結編のはずが、１８年後に４作目が公開されます。ですが、続きというより、後日譚のような話です。
製作費１億５千万ドルをかけましたが、興行収入は前作より３億ドル以上ダウンの４億３千万ドルにとどまりました。
