本作はゴッドファーザーの続きであり、前日譚にもなっています。
前作でコルネオーネ家のトップに立ったマイケルは、勢力をどんどん伸ばしていきます。
カジノホテルを強引な手法で買収したり、敵対するトップを襲ったり、マイケルは冷酷な姿を見せていきます。
すべては家のため、家族のためです。
その一方で襲撃も受け、マイケルについていけない家族や身内が裏切るようになります。
家のため、家族のための行動が、逆に家族がバラバラになってしまう。
妻もマフィアの妻としての生活に耐えきれなくなり、ついに別れることになります。
ラストでマイケルは赦したと見せかけて裏切った兄を殺し、裏切っていまはFBIに守られている仲間も家族を人質にして自殺に追い込みます。また、殺しきれなかった敵対するトップを念押しするように殺します。
前日譚は父の話です。
着の身着のままの生活から、どうやってマフィアを作り上げたか。
それをマイケルのパートの合間合間に挟み込んでいきます。
さて、本作ですがアカデミー賞を６部門受賞するなど、前作に続いてのアカデミー賞受賞作品となりました。
監督の父も作曲賞を受賞、監督の妹のタリア・シャイアも助演女優賞にノミネートと、一家で大活躍の作品となりました。
もちろん血縁だけでなく、テーマソングは有名だし、タリアはマイケルの妹でありかつ少しエキセントリックという難しい役柄を見事に演じ切りました。
タリアはロッキーのエイドリアン役でも有名（むしろ、こちらが有名）です。
受賞ラッシュの作品だけに、とても芸術的で、ひとつひとつのパートがエンタメのように分かりやすく描かれてはいません。とくに前半はややこしいです。
半生記なので淡々としている部分もありますし、おまけに３時間オーバーと長いです。
アルパチーノの演技は、完全にマフィアになりきっていて、表情を変えないなかで威圧や隠された悲哀を表現し、それがとても印象に残ります。まさにアルパチーノです。
製作費１３百万、興行収入１億９３百万と前作には及ばないもののメガヒットとなりました。
